Product Description

Augustine Mowa III

Augustine was born in 1982 to the Bear Clan. He grew up in Shungopavi on Second Mesa in Arizona. He started carving when he was initiated at age 22 and has been carving ever since. He learned how to carve Kachinas by watching his father carve and from his friend Tay Polequaptewa. Augustine has lots of patience for his artwork and it shows in the clean execution of his Kachinas. He mixes his own natural pigments and uses exotic feathers, adding to the uniqueness of his dolls.  He likes to listen to pow-wow and Hopi radio while carving his dolls. He recently got married and now lives in the village of Bacavi on Third Mesa, Arizona.
